A hint of classic playing card with a gothic styled Queen of hearts and Alice in wonderland vibe. This is a custom, textured pink artwork, each of the eight layers features patterns and tiling all created from the same initial heart drawing. This is truly a one-of-a-kind work, the subtle textures and patterns within the pink are multilayered and impossible to recreate exactly. Similar perhaps but each custom piece will be totally unique.
This design started with no planned vision, I wanted to explore patterns solely using the heart shape, drawing the heart shape itself even had its learnings. Traditional playing cards and the gothic stylings of religious vestments came to me as I explored the patterns – a strange combo!
Once I knew where I was going with the patterns the plan was to use only black, white and red as the colouring, don’t ask me why but heck, I thought why not pair the Gothic stylings with a playful baby pink and a baby powder blue for a wonderful contrast.
Like all my geometric designs the passing of day and light brings different looks, depths and tonal variations which is some sort of magic out of my control!
Geometric design has great importance in many cultures dating back through many times, is evident in nature, in science, in creative arts among others. The science tells us that our brains just love symmetry and particularly in our modern age we subconsciously crave some order. Pre Internet age, my own discovery and wonderment came via books, magazines, curiosity and dreaming, mostly through Islamic and Moorish architecture and design, mandala’s, of course my own immediate heritage - Celtic knotworks and designs.
The name comes from a song by one of my favourite musical artists, The Cocteau twins. Cherry coloured funk is ready to hang, measures 360 mm square and is comprised of 8 layers of hardwood plywood’s.
Each artwork piece is designed, and made from start to end by myself in Northwest Ireland using a mixture of wood materials, MDF and plywood varieties including birch, poplar, and mixed hardwoods. All colouring is from ‘Tikkurila’ acrylic and/or enamel paints. As wood textures naturally vary and I often mix paint shades myself the finished artworks can and do vary. Some pieces are totally unique in colour whereas others will always vary a little from the one I made before, which helps make your chosen piece more exclusive! The light angle,time of day etc make each piece look different at different times which adds to the ambience of each design.
